As the knights go down, you’ll get the Drang Twinspears from one of the knights. Just be sure you bait them into attacking before launching a counter to the knights and then go back to outpacing them. If you want to spice things up, there are two sleeping giants on the far end who will stir if you get close - but if you’re not on good terms with giants they might be more of a nuisance than support, even if their wide attacks can damage the Drang Knights. They make up for this with lightning-fast strikes and aggressive charging, so take care as they will attack as a pair. These fast dual-wielders wield drang hammers and drang twinspears, and are highly offensive, but don’t have much in the way of defense, with no shields or heavy armor. If they do, just run back until they lose interest, and once most of the Deacons are gone, you can return to the courtyard to take them on.Īgainst you are two Drang Knights. Take care that you don’t attract the attention of the enemies below, as they might come running. There are three more Deacons at the end of the walkway, but charging the ones by the trees will give you some good cover. Now to take out the Deacons lining the balcony, who overlook the courtyard. Dodge the incoming fireballs and take the first few out. They aren’t staggered easily, but a strong attack can knock them square on their backs. These guys are a little tougher than your average Deacons, especially the more rotund ones who boast more health and a lunging attack. Behind the stairs is the entrance to the upper part of the Cathedral, but let’s clear out the enemies here first. Now head left to find stairs up onto the upper walkway, where many Deacons are roaming around. Under the bridge, there’s a path on the right leading to several hiding Irithyll Slaves, with a spellcaster around the corner, in front of a corpse holding a Dark Stoneplate Ring. Taking on the two enemies in the middle of a firefight may not seem fair, so let's duck under the bridge and take out the ranged support first. Taking stock of the situation, there’s a few other things to note: A long upper walkway lined with Deacons, a path going under the walkway, and two figures waiting on the other side of the courtyard. Of course, judging by the loud rumbling, not all of them are dead.
Up here, you’ll find a large courtyard full of dead Giants. Your only option now is to head upward on the only path going towards the castle. Check around the left side where the path ends with a corpse holding a Large Titanite Shard. Speculation and theorizing is good and all, but when the games items explicitly explain something to you you shouldn't continue to read more into it searching or a hidden meaning that just isn't there. From the back balcony of the Cathedral where you defeated the Pontiff, look below to find two Crystal Lizards, who you can race down and kill to get a Twinkling Titanite each. If they were both alive you would have gotten both souls since they still would have been separate entities when you destroy the body.
Plus all my arguments aside the description of Aldritch's soul states that they're souls fused when Aldritch ate Gwyndolin, and the soul is named Aldritch's soul, not soul of Gwyndolin AND Aldritch. Aldritch wouldn't have been able to fill up his boss room with nibbled on human remains if he had a mouth full of god the whole time.
Aldritch is described as being a greedy monster who enjoys taking his time and listening to his victims screams true, and when you take into account just how long Aldritch has been inhabiting the cathedral, which seems like quite a while considering the sheer amount of goo and human corpses present not only in the cathedral but also the boss room, the weakened Gwyndolyn died a while ago.
One might say Aldritch was merely controlling the body even as he devoured it, due to to him having some sort of puppet power but that's not only the weakest argument but also the dumbest since such an ability is never mentioned or shown to have ever existed. Aldritch consumed Gwyndolin's soul and with that his powers, similar to Ornstein and Enough or the Nameless King and the King of the Storm. It's similar in the Japanese version too. The descriptions of Aldritch's items use words like consumed in the past tense. The trivia section says that Gwyndolin was still alive.
